In the Beginning:
Hervey Bay Community Information Network Project
" The Hervey Bay Community Information Network Project aims to provide a comprehensive, coordinated approach to enhancing community access to the internet and information technology.
Bay Connect embraces the entire community. A main focus will be on providing access and training for people disadvantaged by low income, social isolation or geographical isolation.
The project is an initiative of the Community Solutions Hervey Bay and is being developed in cooperation with the Hervey Bay City Council, the Hervey Bay Tourism and Development Bureau and other support organisations and individuals.
Council and Community Solutions are seeking funding for this project through Networking the Nation, a Commonwealth government program for the enhancement of telecommunications and infrastructure in regional Australia."
It has been 15 years since Bay Connect was a small idea in a group of community minded people, who thought this idea of the 'Internet' could benefit all residents in regional Queensland and Bay Connect was formed.
We have now trained over 10,000 people in all forms of basic computer, intermediate computer, Internet & digital camera studies, most of whom have a Centrelink card or benefit.
The Bay Connect web site was built as a community Work for The Dole Project and was first launched in October 2004. To maintain the site it became necessary to upgrade the software to the Joomla CMS and has been updated to the latest Joomla CMS.
We also hold many a fundraising raffle or sausage sizzle , so next time you see us with a banner, please support us and buy a raffle ticket or a tasty item from the BBQ. Recently we had some handcrafted toys donated and we ran the raffle in conjunction with Hervey Bay Arts Council's events, many thanks to those who bought tickets or offered items back for 're raffle'. Items went to local winners as well as Bundaberg and even down to Tasmania.
For the past 7 years funding has been extremely difficult to obtain, maintain and keep the 'doors open' and we can announce we finally have a new program which commenced in February, 2011 which will be continuing in 2016.
We are still seeking additional sponsorship or sources of funding to assist maintain our training programs.
We thank The Sarina Russo Group for supporting our program and we look forward to working with them throughout 2016.
